As a planner I get asked what is more formal, a necktie or a bow tie? I referred to Google to answer this question. The answer is, “if it is a black-tie event, you are most likely wearing a tuxedo. In that case, stick with a bow tie”. Of course if your event is less formal then either a bow tie or a necktie will work just fine!

In my opinion, you should be comfortable, so wear what matches your personal style and what you are comfortable in.
